At Cotswold Steel we understand the importance of ensuring we stay in line with the rules and regulations of the construction industry. As an Execution Class 2 compliant fabricator, we ensure that our product meets the strict and exacting standards of the Uk building industry.
We work closely with builders, developers, architects, and homeowners to provide steel components that are not only made to measure, but made to last. At the heart of that reliability, is qualified structural engineering.
Why Qualifications Matter
In the construction industry there is a lot of weight on making sure that everything is completed to the highest standard possible. From the design stages right through to snagging lists on completed work. Each person in this process has their unique skillset and qualifications to ensure they provide the best quality of work possible.
Whilst Cotswold Steel does not have any structural engineers on our in house team, we do work closely with many local firms. We will also always communicate with our clients and their engineers/architects where necessary to ensure that the final details of the job are both compliant and practical for installation.
It is important to note that whilst the team at Costwold Steel are committed to helping you get your project to completion, our lack of engineering qualifications means that we CAN NOT offer any structural advice. Whilst we have a lot of experience in the industry, and have a good working knowledge of different build types. We are not legally covered to offer our opinion on steel requirements for any projects.
Why Engineer Sign Off Is Non-Negotiable
In residential projects, especially where budgets are tight and timelines are short, there’s a temptation to rely on “rules of thumb” or reuse old drawings. But this can have serious consequences. Here’s why a qualified structural engineer must sign off all steelwork designs and changes:
1. They Are Legally Responsible
Chartered engineers carry professional indemnity insurance and are trained to follow strict design codes (such as Eurocode 3 for steel structures). Their approval ensures legal accountability and regulatory compliance.
2. They Understand the Whole Picture
Structural engineers consider not just the strength of a beam, but how it interacts with surrounding elements—foundations, walls, and existing timbers. A seemingly minor change (such as shifting a beam end or changing a connection type) can have knock-on effects that only an engineer can properly assess.
3. They Protect You from Future Issues
Unapproved structural changes can lead to building control refusal, invalidated warranties, or worse—structural failure. With proper sign-off, everyone involved is protected, homeowner, builder, and supplier alike.
What About When Cotswold Steel Suggests Connection Details?
In many domestic projects, especially where steelwork interfaces with timber floors, cavity walls, or tricky access areas, builders or designers will ask us for practical suggestions on connection details. This might include:
- Plate or cleat configurations for beam-to-beam junctions
- Bolt positions that ease site installation
- End plate sizing and detail to suit installation
We’re always happy to share our manufacturing and installation expertise, and in many cases, our input can save significant time and cost on site.
However, it’s important to understand:
*Any connection details proposed by Cotswold Steel must still be reviewed and signed off by the project’s structural engineer, and their decision is final.*
Our suggestions are intended to make the design more practical, not to override engineering authority and responsibility.
Even a small tweak to a connection can affect structural integrity, and only the engineer has the full design context and liability.
Additionally, because creating connection solutions takes time, design effort, and internal resources, we do charge a fee for this service. This helps cover:
- The drafting of bespoke detail drawings
- Liaison with the engineer for approval
- Amending fabrication drawings to suit the approved changes
We’ll always be upfront about these charges, and we only proceed once everyone involved is clear and aligned.
It is important that we reiterate that whilst we can use our expertise to assist with connection designs and details, that if a structural engineer disagrees with our input, we will have to revert to the original design or follow the engineers suggestions.
In Summary
Structural engineering is essential for any project involving supporting structures, no matter how small. Whether you’re installing a single steel beam, removing a load-bearing wall, or undertaking a full extension, a qualified structural engineer must assess and design the structure to ensure it is safe, compliant, and fit for purpose.
Importantly, structural engineering doesn’t just apply to steel, it covers the suitability of all materials used, including timber, concrete, masonry, and even fixings and foundations. The engineer ensures that each element performs as part of a complete, stable system.
At Cotswold Steel, we work collaboratively with builders, designers, and engineers to deliver steelwork that fits the project’s needs. While we may provide practical suggestions, particularly around connection details for ease of installation, the structural engineer’s sign-off is always required, and their decision is final. This ensures full compliance with Building Regulations and protects the safety and integrity of the finished structure.
